Intercultural Communication

Intercult.comm-afb.1PhD students and their supervisors regularly have important meetings. They may need to determine the direction of the research for example, establish how many experiments to carry out or how many cases to process. PhDs often find it difficult to defend their own ideas while still maintaining good relations with their supervisor. For supervisors it can be difficult to find the right supervision style. They want to guide the PhD student without demoralizing them or impeding the student’s independence. Scientists naturally have a personal preference for a certain style, but can also be influenced by cultural backgrounds. This training course is suitable for a group of PhD students as well as a group of PhD supervisors.

This course addresses the following points:

  • Discussing the different communication styles used in different cultures
  • Communication at Dutch universities
  • Recognizing your own strengths and your own style of communication
  • Learning new communication styles
